Jesse James in fact and fiction, Part 2: the 1930s

Back on the Jesse trail

The first ‘big’, adult or ‘A’ Western treatment of Jesse James was Fox’s Technicolor extravaganza in 1939, starring heart-throb Tyrone Power as Jesse and Henry Fonda as brother Frank. Jesse James was a huge hit. It was followed in 1940 by a Fritz Lang-directed sequel, The Return of Frank James (Fox, 1940).
